Sistemas Críticos and TietoEnator are pleased to offer Tape Emulator for the Stratus VOS operating system. Tape Emulator is an innovative new solution for Stratus VOS backups that can greatly increase backup speeds while simultaneously reducing administrative overhead. Tape Emulator allows you to leverage your existing Windows®-based storage and backup infrastructure to back up your Stratus VOS systems, saving you time and money.
What is Tape Emulator?
Tape Emulator is a client-server application that allows fast, seamless backup of Stratus data to a Windows-based disk storage system over a local area network.
How does Tape Emulator work?
Tape Emulator is a software solution that essentially makes a Windows-based hard disk look like a Stratus tape drive. There are two components to Tape Emulator:
• Client: Runs on supported Stratus VOS systems
• Server: Runs on supported Windows-based systems
The Windows-based server component listens for save/restore requests from Stratus VOS clients. The client enhances Stratus’ built-in backup functionality, emulating a tape drive and funneling save/restore requests to the Windows-based server. Data streams efficiently between the client and the server during saves and restores.
Since Tape Emulator is compatible with existing VOS save/restore commands, all the functionality of those commands is available when using Tape Emulator. This makes Tape Emulator easy to deploy and use, as only minimal modifications to existing backup routines are necessary.
On the Windows-based system, the backup files containing the VOS data can be backed up to tape, at your convenience, using your existing Windows backup solution.
How does Tape Emulator save time and money?
Flexibility of Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape Backups:
• From the Windows-based system, backup files can be transferred to tape or offsite easily
• Backup files are not overwritten until you choose to delete them
• Restoring from backup files is quicker and easier than restoring from tape
Performance:
• In real-world deployment, Tape Emulator has been proven faster than tape
• Improved performance allows for more frequent system backups
• Backups complete more quickly, reducing the performance impact on critical systems
Integration:
• Tape Emulator is compatible with existing VOS save/restore commands
• Stratus VOS backups can be integrated with your existing Windows-based backup system
With Tape Emulator, a single tape system can back up VOS and Windows-based clients
Ease of Administration: Both the server and client components are simple to install and easy to manage
• The ‘virtual’ tape drive allows for remote and/or unattended backups of Stratus systems
• Tape Emulator can eliminate manual tape changes on your Stratus systems, saving labor Key Benefits
• Allows for centralized management of your Stratus backup with your existing
Windows backup solution
• Better performance on both saves and restores, as compared to conventional
Stratus tape systems
• Single point of tape administration allows for remote or unattended backups
• Simple to install and easy to manage
• Compatible with existing Stratus VOS save/restore commands
Are there specific network requirements to run Tape Emulator?
There are no minimum network speed requirements to run Tape Emulator, but because Tape Emulator transfers data across the network, it is highly dependent on network speed. It is recommended that your client and server be connected by at least a 100mbit/sec switched network connection.
What type of Windows platform will the server component run on?
Tape Emulator’s server component can run on Windows 2000 (all versions), Windows XP (Professional) or Windows 2003 (all versions).
The server component runs only on Windows at this time. Please contact TietoEnator if you have a need for other operating systems.
Will Tape Emulator run on my VOS system?
Tape Emulator will run on most Stratus Continuum® and V-Series systems. Please contact TietoEnator if you would be interested in running Tape Emulator on other Stratus hardware.
Can I retire/remove my Stratus tape drive?
No, you will still need a Stratus tape drive to perform VOS upgrades or to boot a completely dead Stratus module.
